Step inside the Big Plans for the new Melton Hospital

01 Jun 2025 Capital works
The new Melton Hospital project team recently hosted a series of immersive design sessions where staff and consumer representatives had the unique experience of being able to walk through real-size projections of the new hospital’s spaces.
Plans for new Melton Hospital

The sessions took place in a darkened warehouse called Big Plans, where vertical projectors mounted at ceiling level cast images of the architectural plans for the new Melton Hospital at actual size on to an open floor space (23 x 13 metres).

This was an incredibly exciting opportunity to visualise the new space and an important part of the design process. Those present were able to test workflows and move through bedrooms and corridors as if they were already built. A bed and wheelchair were brought on site to ensure there is enough room to move through the spaces as planned.

These sessions enabled the project team to make informed design choices, ensuring that the hospital is fit for purpose.

Thank you to all the Western Health staff and consumers who attended these Big Plans design sessions and who generously continue to contribute their expertise to the design process.
