What we do

Our Endocrinology and Diabetes Unit is based at Sunshine Hospital in the Diabetes and Endocrinology Centre. 

We are a member of the National Association of Diabetes Centres (NADC). This is a network of major diabetes centres around the country. We participate in annual audits and national meetings to make sure you receive the best care.

Our Unit consists of:

  • sessional adult endocrinologists
  • paediatric endocrinologists
  • advanced trainees
  • Hospital Medical Officers (HMOs)
  • Diabetes Nurse Educators (DNEs).

Services and facilities

Diabetes Foot Service (DFS)

Our Diabetes Foot Service provides both inpatient and outpatient services if you have diabetes related foot complications. 

Our service involves a range of staff, including: 

  • diabetes educators
  • endocrinologists
  • infectious disease physicians
  • orthotists
  • podiatrists
  • prosthetists
  • rehabilitation specialists
  • vascular surgeons.

The clinic runs weekly at Footscray Hospital.

 

Metabolic Bone Clinic

Our Metabolic Bone clinic manages a range of metabolic bone conditions including parathyroid, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, and Vitamin D deficiency. It is located at Sunshine Hospital. 

 

Inpatient services

Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital provide inpatient care for you if you have a variety of endocrine conditions. This mainly includes diabetic emergencies (e.g. diabetic ketoacidosis). 

We also provide an inpatient consultation service at our Footscray, Sunshine and Williamstown Hospitals.

 

Outpatient services (specialist clinics) 

Mainly based at Sunshine and cover the spectrum of diabetes and endocrine conditions:

Diabetes Clinics (all except Diabetes Foot Service clinic are based at Sunshine)

  • Adult Diabetes (weekly)
  • Diabetes Foot (weekly, based at Footscray Hospital)
  • Group gestational diabetes education (twice weekly)
  • Group gestational diabetes insulin initiation (twice weekly)
  • Individual gestational diabetes insulin initiation (twice weekly)
  • Insulin pump assessment (weekly)
  • Insulin pump initiation (weekly)
  • Insulin pump review (weekly)
  • Insulin stabilisation (twice weekly)
  • Obstetric Endocrinology (5 clinics, one every weekday)
  • Rapid Access Diabetes (twice a week)
  • Young Adult Diabetes (monthly) 

A phone advice service is also offered to you and to doctors by the endocrinology advanced trainees and DNEs. (details please, including number etc)

Outreach Clinics

We hold weekly community diabetes clinics at Footscray (Co Health), and Deer Park (ISIS). A weekly diabetes and endocrinology clinic is held at Melton. There is also a fortnightly endocrinology clinic held at Ballarat.

 

Diabetes Nurse Education

Our Diabetes Nurse Educator helps you manage your sugar levels if you are a patient with diabetes. They will also support you in:

  • Learning to use devices
  • Understanding the importance of testing
  • Understanding the condition
  • Managing:
  • Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
  • Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
  • Pre-Diabetes
  • DAFNE (Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating)

Who this service is for

Our Metabolic Bone Clinic is for you if you have a metabolic bone or calcium disorder. 

If you have Type 2 diabetes, you will be seen in our Diabetes clinic. 

If you have endocrine disorders apart from metabolic bone and calcium disorders, you will be seen in the Endocrinology clinic.

You may have a GP referral to access this service or contact 03 9747 7609 to arrange a self-referral. We offer both group and individual appointments.
