Endoscopic services
Where to find this service
What we do
Our endoscopic services provide outpatient and inpatient diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures. We offer the latest endoscopic techniques to treat gastrointestinal conditions, some of which make it possible to avoid surgery.
Procedures are performed across four campuses: Footscray Hospital, Sunshine Hospital, Bacchus Marsh Hospital and Sunbury Day Hospital.
Our team members include:
- gastroenterologist endoscopists, including interventional endoscopists
- advanced practice nurse endoscopist
- respiratory specialists
- colorectal & general surgery (CRGS) surgeons
- upper gastrointestinal and general surgery (UGIG) surgeons.
For health professionals
We also offer training and teaching for basic and advanced endoscopic procedures. We routinely train gastroenterology and surgical registrars, an interventional endoscopy fellow, and respiratory registrars.
Services and facilities
Most of our endoscopic procedures are for upper or lower gastrointestinal (GI) cancer prevention, exclusion, diagnosis or treatment.
We provide the following endoscopic procedures:
- anal manometry
- bronchoscopy
- EBUS (Endobronchial Ultrasound)
- capsule endoscopy
- gastroscopy
- colonoscopy
- flexible sigmoidoscopy
- EMR (Endoscopic Mucosal Resection)
- ESD (Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection)
- ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography) including direct cholangioscopy
- EUS (Endoscopic Ultrasound)
- PEG (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy)
- push enteroscopy
- single balloon assisted enteroscopy
- upper GI and lower GI luminal stent insertion.
Who this service is for
The endoscopy lists at Footscray and Sunshine Hospitals cater for patients who:
- require interventional endoscopy
- have complex care needs that need to be accommodated in a tertiary hospital environment
- have an anaesthetic risk considered too great for the Sunbury Community Hospital or Bacchus Marsh Hospital environments. These include if you have a high BMI or severe cardiac or respiratory comorbidities.
Unfortunately, due to the demand for high acuity procedures and/or from high acuity patients, if you can have your procedure done at our Community Day Hospitals, we cannot take requests for procedures to be performed at either Footscray or Sunshine Hospitals.
You may have your procedure performed by a trainee or registrar, under the supervision of a qualified specialist.
Referrals
If you require an endoscopic procedure (for example a gastroscopy or colonoscopy) your general practitioner or specialist will write a referral to us.
We will review the referral and decide if you need to be seen in a clinic or whether it is appropriate to book you directly for the procedure. If possible, we try to book you directly for the procedure to avoid the wait for clinic review.
