Gait and Balance Gym

Providing tailored exercise programs for adults over 65 to improve strength, stability and coordination.

What we do

Working in conjunction with the Falls and Fractures Clinic, our Gait and Balance Gym provides exercise-based balance training programs to older adults (aged 65 and over) to prevent falls and fractures.

This is an MBS Clinic. You will be bulk billed.

Who this service is for

You must:

  • be aged 65 and over
  • have no serious memory deficits (MMSE >18)
  • be able to mobilise independently or with use of gait aid (frame, stick etc)
  • provide consent/be willing to attend the clinic.

You can also use this service if you:

  • have a history of falls and/or fractures (more than two in the last twelve months)
  • are a single faller with established gait and/or balance deficiency
  • have balance deficits caused by physical, neurological and/or vestibular deficits
  • have clinical or paraclinical (Bone Mineral Density or BMD) risk of fractures
  • have a history of symptomatic or asymptomatic fragility fracture
  • have sarcopenia, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and/or other musculoskeletal conditions
  • have had an unexplained fall with apparent complex medical cause
  • have other chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Exclusion criteria

You cannot use this service if you:

  • are a patient from an aged care facility
  • are wheelchair bound
  • have dementia/cognitive impairments (MMSE<18)
  • are aged under 65.

Referrals

Your referral must include:

  • your medical history
  • a referral form (Adobe online form): this is for Individual Allied Health Services under Medicare if you are a patient with a chronic medical condition and complex care needs
  • a GP management plan (item 721) and team care arrangement (item 721).
