Haematology

Diagnosing and treating blood disorders, including anaemia, clotting problems, and cancers of the blood and bone marrow.

What we do

Haematology is the branch of medicine that focuses on diseases of the blood, bone marrow and lymphatic system. These include anaemia, clotting disorders, leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

At Western Health, we have a team of specialists who work together to provide expert, high-quality care to patients with both non-cancerous (benign) and cancerous (malignant) blood disorders.

Our team includes:

  • haematologists – who diagnose and treat diseases that involve the blood or blood-forming organs
  • radiation oncologists – who treat cancer using radiation therapy
  • palliative care physicians – who help manage severe symptoms, improve quality of life and support people with life-limiting illness, along with their families and carers
  • pathologists – who diagnose and manage diseases by testing blood and tissue samples
  • allied health staff – who help patients with everyday activities, such as nutrition, mobility and emotional wellbeing.

Access to clinical trials

Our service also takes part in clinical trials. This gives patients the opportunity to access the latest treatments and advances in research.

Services and facilities

If you require assessment and management of a haematological condition, we run MBS-funded specialist clinics at:

  • Sunshine Hospital (Wednesday and Thursday afternoons)
  • Sunbury Day Hospital (Friday mornings)
  • Melton Community Services (Thursday only).

Referrals

Patients will need a referral from their GP or medical practitioner to attend a specialist clinic. Please bring:

  • copies of any films or disks with images of any scans or texts
  • any medications that you are currently on.

This will help our doctors see what tests you have already had and know how to help you best.

For health professionals, please see our referral guidelines on how to refer patients to our clinic. Please address all referrals to our Head of Unit, Dr William Renwick.

In the case of a life threatening emergency, call 000.
