Stomal therapy

Supporting people living with an abdominal stoma, providing education, care and ongoing management.

A stoma is a surgically created opening within the body surface that helps drain bodily products that would usually be removed by the bowel or bladder.

Our Stomal Therapy Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) works across three hospitals to assist with stoma care, education and support before and after surgery.

What we do

Our Stomal Therapy CNC provides:

  • pre-operative education and stoma siting
  • post-operative care and monitoring
  • appliance selection and fitting
  • education and self-management training
  • support with skin care and complications
  • assistance with discharge planning and referrals.

The service works closely with surgeons, dietitians, wound care nurses and other members of the patient’s healthcare team.

Inpatients are referred to the Stomal Therapy CNC by their treating medical or surgical unit.
