What we do

Nephrology is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases. 

 

Our team of specialists provides a full range of renal services, including:

  • general nephrology
  • dialysis (including home and hospital based)
  • kidney transplant care.

 

Our goal is to deliver care that is convenient, consultative and close to home. We provide services across five locations, so patients can receive treatment in their local area:

  • Footscray Hospital
  • Sunshine Hospital
  • Williamstown Hospital
  • Sunbury Community Hospital
  • Melton Health.

 

Services and facilities

Dialysis at home

We support patients who wish to manage their dialysis at home with training and support in:

  • home haemodialysis
  • peritoneal dialysis.

 

Satellite dialysis units

For patients who need dialysis in a clinical setting, we offer satellite dialysis services at:

  • Williamstown
  • Melton
  • Sunbury
  • Sunshine.

 

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) management

We offer ongoing support for patients living with chronic kidney disease, including"

  • regular monitoring
  • treatment plans to help slow disease progression
  • education and support for patients and families.

 

Kidney transplant care

While kidney transplants are performed at Royal Melbourne Hospital, we manage:

  • pre-transplant evaluation and preparation
  • post-transplant follow-up and care
  • coordination with the transplant team.

Referrals

Referrals for people with any kidney-related disease conditions, including chronic kidney disease, can be made by GPs to the Department of Nephrology using the referral guidelines

Please ensure that all recent pathology results and relevant investigations are attached to the referrals.
