Western Health provides plastic and reconstructive surgery services to treat patients with trauma, skin cancer, and other conditions affecting the skin and soft tissue.
Our team of specialist surgeons deliver both elective and emergency care across multiple sites.
What we do
Plastic and reconstructive surgery includes:
- skin cancer removal and reconstruction
- trauma-related repair (including hand and facial injuries)
- scar revision and skin grafting
- treatment for chronic wounds
- hand surgery (including carpal tunnel and Dupuytren’s contracture)
- removal of cysts, moles and other soft tissue lesions.
We work closely with other clinical teams including general surgery, orthopaedics, oncology and emergency.
Where we operate
The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery services all Western Health campuses. Most surgeries are performed at Sunshine Hospital, where the Department is based.
We provide inpatient, outpatient and day surgery options, depending on the condition and required procedure.
Referrals and eligibility
Referrals are accepted from general practitioners, hospital departments and emergency services.
All outpatient referrals must include:
- patient demographics
- reason for referral and relevant history
- imaging or pathology reports (if applicable).

For all urgent or trauma-related referrals, please contact the Plastic Surgery Registrar on call (via switchboard) to further discuss.
Referrals are triaged and prioritised based on clinical need. Wait times may apply for non-urgent procedures. For all urgent and trauma-related referrals, please contact the Plastic Surgery Registrar via the switchboard to discuss further.
Locations
The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery services all Western Health campuses (including Sunshine, Footscray, Williamstown, Bacchus Marsh). Most of the surgeries are performed at Sunshine Hospital, where the Department is based. Outpatient Clinics are held at Sunshine Hospital and Joan Kirner Women & Children’s Hospital (co-located at Sunshine campus).
Teaching and education
Western Health is a teaching hospital affiliated with University of Melbourne. As part of the Western Clinical School, the Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery contributes to the structured teaching program and assists undergraduate students to immerse within the clinical environment.
The Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and Western Health is also accredited by Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) as a teaching hospital. Every year, four trainee surgeons spend valuable time and gain clinical experience at Western Health as part of their training program.
