Perioperative and critical care

Supporting patients before, during and after their surgery, including those needing close monitoring in intensive care.

Western Health provides perioperative and critical care services across our major hospital campuses. Our teams support patients before, during and after surgery, as well as those requiring high-level monitoring or intensive care.

These services are delivered by experienced multidisciplinary teams including anaesthetists, nurses, surgeons and allied health professionals.

What we do

Our perioperative and critical care services include:

  • pre-admission assessment and preparation for surgery
  • anaesthesia services for elective and emergency surgery
  • post-anaesthesia recovery care
  • intensive care for critically unwell patients
  • pain management and procedural sedation
  • clinical support for major trauma and medical emergencies.

Where services are provided

Perioperative and critical care is available at:

  • Sunshine Hospital
  • Footscray Hospital

  • Bacchus Marsh Hospital.

Each site provides different levels of care depending on its facilities and service profile.

Patient-centred approach

Our focus is on safe, high-quality care that respects the needs of each patient. We work to minimise risks, support recovery and deliver care in a timely and compassionate manner.
