Thoracic Surgery is the repair of organs located in the thorax, or chest. The thoracic cavity is between the neck and the diaphragm. It contains the heart and lungs (cardiopulmonary system), the oesophagus, trachea, pleura, mediastinum, chest wall and diaphragm.
Thoracic Surgery encompasses exploratory and diagnostic procedures, many through minimally invasive techniques.
These include:
- Lung and oesophageal tumours
- Management of thoracic trauma
Western Health provides a Thoracic Surgery service in conjunction with specialists from the Royal Melbourne Hospital. The Department provides consultative and operative services on an elective and emergency basis.
