The Medical Surgical Unit (MSU) provides an excellent service to the inpatient population of Western Health We are a dedicated group of staff that consists of Doctors, Nurses, Allied Health, Clerical and Environmental personnel. We have a diverse and multi-cultural team that works towards one goal: “Safe and Quality patient care”. MSU provides immense learning opportunities to everyone within our departments giving staff the opportunity to develop both personally and professionally.

Patient Journey

All patients admitted to MSU are admitted through Urgent Care Centre, community palliative care referral, GP referral from our Accredited GPs, and those requiring to stay in hospital for recovery following surgery.

MSU visiting hours are from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.; if visitors wish to visit outside of these hours, they must talk with the nurse in charge.

Admission

Nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team will care for and acknowledge each patient's individuality. Every patient who comes to our services has the right to be involved in their treatment and decision making. The multidisciplinary team approach ensures that patients receive comprehensive care that addresses their physical, emotional, and educational needs

While under our care, nursing staff will update and ensure that all important information is available to the patient.

MSU play a crucial role in providing high-quality care for patients with a wide range of medical and surgical needs. MSU accommodates a range of procedures from a number of specialties including:

  • Detoxification
  • Discharge Process

Before going home, patients will receive their post-surgery care information, follow up appointments and an education pamphlet from the Discharge Nurse. Once the patient is ready and a friend/relative has arrived they will then be discharged. All patients should be discharged by 10.00am.
