Medical Ambulatory Day Unit (MADU)

The Medical Ambulatory Day Unit, or MADU unit, is for patients who need treatment for a variety of conditions in hospital, without needing to stay overnight. It has 6 chairs and 2 beds for treatment.

What we do

At MADU, patients receive treatment for a range of conditions. This may include, but not limited to:

  • Blood transfusions
  • Iron infusions
  • Immunoglobulin infusions to treat autoimmune diseases
  • Lumbar punctures
  • Biologic infusions to treat conditions like Crohn's Disease
  • Venesections
  • Dynamic testing

Services and facilities

MADU provides treatments across a range of specialties, including:

  • Neurology
  • Gynaecology
  • Haematology/oncology
  • Renal medicine
  • Endocrinology
  • Nephrology
  • Respiratory
  • Rheumatology
  • Dermatology

Referrals

You may be referred to MADU in several ways:

  • GP for blood transfusions only
  • Western Health private consulting rooms
  • After a recent hospital stay

Please note: MADU cannot take direct GP referrals for iron infusions. If you need iron, your GP can refer you to a Western Health specialist clinic (such as Haematology, Gastroenterology or Gynaecology). If an infusion is required, MADU will then arrange this treatment.

When an appointment is made for you, you will receive a letter in the mail. Once you receive your letter, please phone the relevant site (Sunshine or Footscray) to confirm your booking.

If you are a Health Professional, you can find more information on our Blood transfusions referrals page.
