Western Health has developed an African Women’s Wellness Program for maternity care at Sunshine Hospital.
The aim of the program is to:
- provide accessible and culturally appropriate clinical services
- provide education for African women
- provide resources for African women
- support women who are affected by Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting also known as circumcision
- support health professionals involved in the care of African women.
For African women the Program offers:
- Women centred care, that is specialised care that is centred around the woman and her individual needs, taking into account her cultural needs
- Culturally appropriate information and education resources
- Support for women as they journey through the maternity health system
For health professionals and the wider community the Program offers:
- Culturally appropriate information and education
- Bi monthly collaboration meetings with community agencies and Western Health
- Collaboration and resource sharing among community based organizations, service providers and health care professionals within the multi-disciplinary team
- Partnering with GP’s for improved referral pathways
- Ongoing education for all health professionals
- Clinical practice guidelines
