Maternal Fetal Medicine

Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) operates as a clinic at Joan Kirner Women's and Children's at Sunshine Hospital.

MFM provides care for women with the highest risk and most complex pregnancies. Our services include:

  • Management of complex maternal medical disorders

  • Diagnosis of chromosomal disorders using amniocentesis and CVS (Chorionic Villus Sampling) and ultrasound based diagnosis of fetal abnormalities
  • Multiple pregnancy
  • Preterm labour surveillance
  • Recurrent miscarriage
  • Pregnancy loss
  • Pre-pregnancy counselling
  • Genetic services
  • Bereavement support

The underlying principle of a MFM service is to:

  • provide management and care based on up to date research
  • perform timely diagnostic tests
  • work in a team to give comprehensive counselling and information to women using our service
  • optimise outcomes for both the mother and baby.

MFM has an important role in providing a high level of training and education for a range of specialist staff including obstetric, midwifery, radiology, social workers, sonographers and genetic counsellors and is key in the development of pregnancy care guidelines within the Hospital. An important goal of the MFM Unit at Western Health is to drive and promote research within the Health Service.
