Our culture and values

At Western Health, we believe in collaboration, respect and continuous learning. We serve one of the most diverse communities in Victoria, giving our medical staff exposure to a wide range of clinical cases – from neonatal intensive care to geriatrics.

We support multi-disciplinary teamwork, and our senior leaders actively encourage the medical workforce to shape the future of healthcare. The Junior Medical Advisory Council (JMAC) gives junior doctors a strong voice and the chance to work collaboratively with the Chief Medical Officer.

We promote wellbeing and inclusion through our Positive Workplace Strategy, which helps create a safe, respectful and empowering work environment for all employees and volunteers.

We also support flexible employment options, including full-time, part-time and locum appointments.

Research and innovation

Western Health is deeply committed to research and innovation. In 2018 alone, our Office for Research:

  • approved 201 new projects
  • attracted $40.58 million in research grants
  • supported over 700 active projects
  • contributed to over 500 published journal articles.

We maintain strategic research partnerships across Australia and internationally with leading universities, hospitals, research organisations and industry.

Staff are encouraged to participate in research and contribute to evidence-based practice and clinical innovation.

Training and education

Our Medical Education Unit provides a comprehensive and supportive learning environment for prevocational doctors. Educational programs are built on strong clinical principles, ensuring our junior doctors are well prepared for specialist training and long-term careers in healthcare.

We offer a diverse range of internal rotations, including:

  • geriatrics
  • radiology
  • paediatrics
  • migrant screening.

Our external rotations are supported through strong partnerships with Mildura Base Hospital and Royal Children’s Hospital, among many others.
