Junior medical staff education

Western Health’s Medical Education Unit (MEU) brings together everything our junior doctors need to develop safe, confident and career ready clinical practice.

About Junior medical staff education

At Western Health, we provide:

  • Integrated training progression - many of our interns progress to HMO and registrar roles, then into college programs and, ultimately, consultant posts within Western Health.
  • Simulation and skills training – insitu simulation on the ward and small group skills sessions let you practise procedures and crisis management in the same settings you will work.
  • Supportive culture – our educators, clinical leads and senior trainees foster a collegiate, inclusive environment where questions are welcomed and wellbeing is prioritised.
  • Exam preparation – structured teaching, exam preparation and career planning workshops to help you applying for and progressing through accredited training, advanced training and fellowships.

Clinical skills and career workshops

The MEU coordinates a rolling calendar of practical workshops open to interns, HMOs and registrars across all specialties. Sessions run after hours or in protected teaching time and are facilitated by senior clinicians.

  • Core clinical procedures: ultrasound-guided IV cannulation, suturing and wound closure, implanon NXT insertion and removal, pasting and back-slab techniques, basic and advanced life support updates, responding to MET (Code Blue) calls.
  • Career development: writing a standout CV and cover letter, interview skills and mastering mock panels, choosing and mapping career pathways.

  • Deteriorating Patient Program (DPP) – mandatory for interns and HMOs, covering they key aspects of responding to deteriorating and seriously unwell patients.
