Hospital Medical Officers
About HMOs
In 2025 we employed 226 HMOs, supporting career paths in everything from General Practice to Critical Care.
Historically HMOs entered one of three streams — medical, surgical or general — but from the 2025 clinical year the National Framework for Prevocational Medical Training (NFPMT) removes streaming in PGY2 (except BPT1). PGY2 doctors can still preference rotations that fit their goals.
Education and support
Each stream has dedicated Directors of Clinical Training and Medical Education Officers. Weekly unit‑based teaching is supplemented by protected HMO education sessions, skills workshops and exam preparation programs.
Campuses and external rotations
Most rotations are based at Sunshine Hospital (including Joan Kirner Women’s & Children’s) and Footscray Hospital. Limited terms are available at Williamstown and Sunbury. External rotations include Paediatrics in Mildura and Melton, Paediatric Surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital, and Psychiatry at Melton or Orygen.
