The Department of Surgery delivers general inpatient and outpatient care and accepts tertiary referrals across 14 surgical specialties. Each year our team performs more than 14,000 elective and 10,000 emergency operations across our five campuses: Footscray, Sunshine /Joan Kirner, Williamstown, Sunbury Day Hospital and Bacchus Marsh — and through regional partners in Bendigo, Shepparton, Launceston, Alice Springs and Albury. 

We offer training pathways through: 

• SET‑accredited registrar positions are administered through the relevant Surgical Education & Training (SET) boards of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS).
• Western Health also recruits unaccredited surgical registrars in General Surgery, Urology, Orthopaedics, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and other streams.

With two busy campuses (Sunshine and Footscray) and access to all major medical and surgical specialties, Western Health provides excellent preparation for Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM). Trainees rotate through ICU, Anaesthetics, Paediatric ED, major referral hospitals and a Simulation Education post, and can undertake research through the Joseph Epstein Centre for Emergency Medicine Research.

The Joan Kirner Women’s & Children’s Hospital at Sunshine provides a balanced mix of inpatient and outpatient experience: 

• 24‑bed Children’s Ward
• Level 6 NICU supporting 6,000+ births each year
• Busy Paediatric ED with 20 000+ presentations
• Multidisciplinary clinics across general, developmental and surgical paediatrics, plus subspecialties (cardiology, neurology, allergy, adolescent medicine, dermatology, endocrinology)

Western Health delivers comprehensive mental‑health care through inpatient units (including a 16‑bed women’s ward at Footscray), the new 52‑bed Sunshine Mental Health & Wellbeing Centre community clinics in Sunshine and Melton, rehabilitation services, consultation‑liaison teams and subspecialty streams (Child & Adolescent, Aged, Emergency and Addiction Psychiatry). 

Our fully accredited psychiatry training program commenced in 2024 with ten first‑year registrars and will expand to cover all five years, including advanced training. 

We also host unaccredited registrars, international medical graduates, HMOs and interns, all supported by an approachable consultant group — many of whom trained here themselves.

Our Geriatric Medicine program offers 16 advanced‑training and one unaccredited registrar positions under the guidance of 30 Consultant Geriatricians, caring for a culturally and linguistically diverse population.

Western Health participates in the North Western, Monash and Eastern training schemes and is accredited by ANZCA for two years of core training. We also employ 11 provisional fellows/advanced trainees directly each year. 

Fellowship streams: Perioperative, Simulation, Obstetric, Quality Assurance, Sustainability and Principal. Both fellowship and advanced trainee posts are ANZCA‑accredited and suit doctors with at least two years of prior anaesthesia experience.

Western Health Drug Health Services (WHDHS) delivers residential, community and hospital programs to a diverse population, including services at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre. Registrars rotate through outpatient clinics, consultation‑liaison, community withdrawal, residential rehabilitation and statewide services, and can complete their entire Addiction Medicine or Addiction Psychiatry training with us. 

Mentorship is provided by experienced Addiction Medicine consultants, with opportunities in service development, audit and research.

Based at Joan Kirner Women’s & Children’s, Western Health is one of Australia’s busiest maternity services with 6,500+ births each year. We offer rotations in Maternal–Fetal Medicine, Pelvic‑Floor Gynaecology and Gynaecological Oncology. 

Pathways include: 

• 3‑ or 6‑month general‑stream HMO rotations
• 12‑month senior O&G HMO positions
• Unaccredited registrar positions
• RANZCOG‑accredited junior and senior registrar training, advanced training modules and subspecialty Maternal–Fetal Medicine posts
• Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Women’s Health 

Trainees receive tailored mentoring, a respected education program and strong consultant support.
