Doctor internships

Western Health’s intern program supports you every step of your first postgraduate year.

About internships

Internship is an exciting first step in every doctor’s career. Western Health offers a structured, supportive intern program that guides you from day one through to the completion of your first Post‑Graduate (PGY1). Across five rotations you will build confidence in core clinical skills, explore specialty interests and receive guidance on your future career pathway.

In 2025 we welcomed 100 interns from every Victorian medical school (Deakin, Monash, Notre Dame and the University of Melbourne) plus interstate graduates.

Rotation framework

Our program aligns with the National Framework for Prevocational Medical Training and guarantees exposure to all required components:

  • Undifferentiated patient care (such as Emergency Medicine, General Medicine and General Surgery)
  • Chronic care (such as Cardiology, Neurology, Respiratory Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Geriatric Medicine)
  • Acute care (such as Intensive Care, Orthopaedic Surgery, Urology, and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery)
  • Peri‑operative/procedural (such as Anaesthetics, Urology, Orthopaedics, and Plastic Surgery)
  • General/other (such as Psychiatry, Radiology and Paediatric Emergency Department)

Interns mainly rotate through Footscray and Sunshine hospitals; two positions per term are based at Williamstown Hospital.

Orientation and ongoing support

Your year begins with a five‑day orientation in early January that combines shadowing the outgoing intern, hands‑on procedural training and electronic medical record (EMR) workshops.

Ongoing support is delivered by our Supervisor of Intern Training, Medical Education Officers, and the unit‑based registrars and consultants who provide real‑time feedback and mentorship.

Protected education and skills development

  • Weekly intern education sessions with protected teaching time
  • Unit‑specific teaching and bedside tutorials
  • Simulation workshops (e.g. deteriorating patient scenarios)
  • Career‑planning sessions and mock interviews
